It seems that Mediterranean tree frogs (Hyla meridionalis) especially enjoy the Cape gooseberries (Physalis peruviana) of the Horta and their little japanese lanterns. It has become a sort of annual meeting, until the heavy frosts of January fall on the plant. While we pick the berries, we keep an open eye in the hope of coming across this true jewel, definitely one of the prettiest of all amphibians. Very few other amphibians are to be seen at this season. Two crushed Pleurodeles Waltl on the village road and some Alytes cisternasii that T. spotted in january in two of our ponds and in the river.
