We usually mulch with straw at the Monte as it is a material that is easy to handle. We generally spread the content of one small straw bale around each fruit tree. This year, we experimented with two less usual mulching materials. One is <i>cardboard,</i> which we used specifically to try and slow down the growth of couch grass (<i><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cynodon_dactylon">Cynodon dactylon</a></i>) ("grama-bermudas" in Portuguese). The latter tends to be one of our greatest challenges. The other mulching material is whool. The COVID-19 crisis seems to have killed the whool market in our area and we had then a large amount of whool at our disposal, which we decided to take advantage of. Let's see in a few months how both mulching materials will behave. With the rainy season coming, cardboard is likely to decompose. However, it may have managed in the meantime to reduce couch grass's vigor.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggd7V7Q_Soo9mdXoRlRD1-dYtV8ki8wyCagDsVvSpifPqxuvfNVVfSfNJp58_SxqUJNTNZ9uG_ERRZezVFDiXDTJbAnASaphrkyisYPOYKyI7vD71nfflr0-2OAoFlcBeLqGoutAmZ9SY/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="4000" data-original-width="6000" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEggd7V7Q_Soo9mdXoRlRD1-dYtV8ki8wyCagDsVvSpifPqxuvfNVVfSfNJp58_SxqUJNTNZ9uG_ERRZezVFDiXDTJbAnASaphrkyisYPOYKyI7vD71nfflr0-2OAoFlcBeLqGoutAmZ9SY/w640-h426/DSC_0006.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFpIw4McY1c52B0QFFuGbqkedQfrqBRKkfBNRBtQlAJqbKbHdqxi1mO5kLOACwbPS0oi75enOebvPeFNrauRX5g66QTTCwlHEPPenEMfIqE7eaT-cqeUZ8L5OOwqrfPdMpx8I5Btx4zsY/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="2048" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFpIw4McY1c52B0QFFuGbqkedQfrqBRKkfBNRBtQlAJqbKbHdqxi1mO5kLOACwbPS0oi75enOebvPeFNrauRX5g66QTTCwlHEPPenEMfIqE7eaT-cqeUZ8L5OOwqrfPdMpx8I5Btx4zsY/w640-h426/DSC_0033.JPG" width="640" /></a></div></div><p></p>Axel Gosserieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01437702121256468664noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1619943034023740844.post-38723710992001219602020-09-20T11:51:00.002-07:002020-09-20T11:54:36.471-07:00Les hirondelles de Paula Lança<p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4urn_bFq3YgjhHNiJ-Fpc7nrpKRsD3cmPsgykRvChJvwWkrZ3mtfLarzSjXNWuoobyimllq8Gc8i81hijLJdTFQKLqsNlBVogAY_NIrri6-9-6hn8LANQL1qm_BXVvMVRHd4aq9Da4I8/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="4000" data-original-width="6000" height="427" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4urn_bFq3YgjhHNiJ-Fpc7nrpKRsD3cmPsgykRvChJvwWkrZ3mtfLarzSjXNWuoobyimllq8Gc8i81hijLJdTFQKLqsNlBVogAY_NIrri6-9-6hn8LANQL1qm_BXVvMVRHd4aq9Da4I8/" width="640" /></a></div><br />L'hirondelle de céramique trainait dans l'obscurité d'une armoire depuis quelques mois. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhl-LHkcAlW_7PCSaF_O1aBuLJZLZyKnpGEA2myHRRyVxJpCo1tZGANIVjulpuqEzlIFO-DuP5wNpPKuG9gNt8_yUCs_aEwOptWauq_iRIIEg5Cc9VEF7tvjDCMzSJRPpo8jLmsIpCigp4/s2048/DSC_0192.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1365" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhl-LHkcAlW_7PCSaF_O1aBuLJZLZyKnpGEA2myHRRyVxJpCo1tZGANIVjulpuqEzlIFO-DuP5wNpPKuG9gNt8_yUCs_aEwOptWauq_iRIIEg5Cc9VEF7tvjDCMzSJRPpo8jLmsIpCigp4/w426-h640/DSC_0192.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><p>Ma curiosité attisée, je me pris au jeu d'en chercher d'autres. So far, I hadn't paid too much attention to them, taking a picture from time to time. This summer, I decided to look more carefully. As a result, we ended up coming across four different species of mantises. By far the most common is the European mantis <i><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_mantis">Mantis religiosa</a> </i>(here, a male in a pomegranate bush the leaves of which are cut by <i><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Megachile">Megachile</a></i> bees). Walking through the grassland, I came across many of them this summer.</p><p style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1360" data-original-width="2048" height="427" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpqTL8dJ29S8u1TW_R79DwGxx52rZZaK7t7OAFzTfCJK8mwi-1UaLO30EMOvxNmvrFAKNDNoj57VoMkQP2l7EoIsbbf3tRA0-B6p723J0mNUCI1QydiAKJTVnkHSc6VVthQQqrnwiDiQU/w640-h427/DSC_0031.JPG" width="640" /></p><p>I was also happy to find two nymphs of conehead mantis <i><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empusa_pennata">Empusa pennata</a> </i>("diabinho" in Portuguese) at two separate spots of the Monte. They were no larger than my thumbnail at this lifestage. </p><p></p><div style="text-align: center;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="2048" height="425" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7P75eScWZWv7C58DPvwr4lpStY5-wiRUFEd8i82p2thzEBfxebWwc63hWU3P63zGQRuBDpAE0yzsJh-OdNJnfwpX9QupVi8tEJpN6qtUZEppeUJqvJZC6yJCog4pJHKEKrbpC3FLDipU/w640-h425/DSC_0069.JPG" width="640" /></div><p></p><p>The biology of Conehead mantises differs from the one of other Mantises since it seems that females don't tend to eat the males after mating. The antennae of adult males are impressive and much longer than those of females. Here is one of the nymphs (above). If you are curious about their biology (and if you happen to read French), <a href="http://www.intratext.com/IXT/FRA1600/_PN.HTM">here</a> is what the great entomologist Jean-Henry Fabre was writing about them at the very end of the 19th century.</p><p>We had already come across <i>Mantis religiosa</i> several times before. The same holds for <i>Empusa pennata</i> once, <a href="http://cebolasdocampinho.blogspot.com/2013/03/blog-post.html">a few years ago</a>. The surprise came from two extra species. One is the Mediterranean Mantis <i><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iris_oratoria">Iris oratoria</a></i>, ("Louva-a-deus-ocelado" in Portuguese), with its wings painted with colorful eyespots... We came across a few in the village garden. Here is one on a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitex_agnus-castus">Chaste tree</a> bush.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXOCdcQsbVWusPve9BL1S1WCWnP4420bNMhTzX3ZJ4FxzjL-351fTImUUt7hnT23VvTNZo4w4HkRApcfzSaJGPSuZTWWOKr5e_PNlVHZ36ubaScFY2uTIOt1WqONwn6VGWlstCEwwE8uw/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1894" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXOCdcQsbVWusPve9BL1S1WCWnP4420bNMhTzX3ZJ4FxzjL-351fTImUUt7hnT23VvTNZo4w4HkRApcfzSaJGPSuZTWWOKr5e_PNlVHZ36ubaScFY2uTIOt1WqONwn6VGWlstCEwwE8uw/w592-h640/DSC_0136.JPG" width="592" /></a></div><br />The last species is the European dwarf mantis <i><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ameles_spallanzania">Ameles spallanzania</a></i>. The female (pictured here) has very short wings and is unable to fly, with conic eyers and a short and curved abdomen. This one came as a real surprise. The challenge will be to meet it again, and perhaps to discover one or two more species of Mantises, among those present in the Alentejo. We'll keep our eyes wide open...<p></p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_xejj0QDmfw26rJNn4sWkTgIlpUsJj5eFxgF23XmsPWjBPMDaj-tHdQI-EqhV-Ei1dqcqY9s05qKxXhLeBGypChOiLe320fFjKMMFF2_9vLVuE1A9zaFUimmw-Fu8nfXRNzQonTrqdhs/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="1365" data-original-width="2048" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_xejj0QDmfw26rJNn4sWkTgIlpUsJj5eFxgF23XmsPWjBPMDaj-tHdQI-EqhV-Ei1dqcqY9s05qKxXhLeBGypChOiLe320fFjKMMFF2_9vLVuE1A9zaFUimmw-Fu8nfXRNzQonTrqdhs/w640-h426/DSC_0018.JPG" width="640" /></a></div><p></p>Axel Gosserieshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01437702121256468664noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1619943034023740844.post-16259098125997972712020-09-19T01:17:00.008-07:002020-09-19T02:13:12.490-07:00Manneken pis in the Serra d'Ossa (Rio de Moinhos)<p>One of the great legacies of the Brussels culture is its "Manneken pis" (also known as "Julianske"). There is admittedly growing evidence of the importance of human <a href="https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/human-urine-is-an-effective-fertilizer/">urine as a fertilizer</a> in agriculture (see also this <a href="https://www.terran.fr/urine-or-liquide-jardin-de-looze-livre-editions-terran.html">great book</a> in French). However, Brusseleers have also known for a long time the importance of peeing <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manneken_Pis">to extinguish early fires and/or to win battles</a>. My alentejano fellows are wise people (well... most of the time) and they are keen on reminding us about this Belgian wisdom. You will find evidence of this in <a href="http://cebolasdocampinho.blogspot.com/2015/08/manneken-pis-alentejano.html">Castelo de Vide</a>. But we also came across further evidence this summer in Rio de Moinhos, in the heart of Serra d'Ossa, admittedly in a less active version. Here is the proof (especially for my friend Wouter), as mathematicians would say.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjr5TOi9-VEciAhJhkCB1EYr1Gj0V8Cmy8UR7P1EMGf3D9B9Yl15BqnLL8HD1TmyQl5RGKr6KQzn-Ehyphenhyphen6ZawrbTdCaWwLmzlH24Zrx_tIBWGwZqzK9288rG71cDtXD2u228a_Suv7udyew/s6000/DSC_0023.JPG" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4000" data-original-width="6000" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjr5TOi9-VEciAhJhkCB1EYr1Gj0V8Cmy8UR7P1EMGf3D9B9Yl15BqnLL8HD1TmyQl5RGKr6KQzn-Ehyphenhyphen6ZawrbTdCaWwLmzlH24Zrx_tIBWGwZqzK9288rG71cDtXD2u228a_Suv7udyew/w640-h426/DSC_0023.JPG" width="640" /></a></div></div></div><br />Manneken pis is of course not the only sign of openness of Alentejanos to foreign cultures. Just before Christmas 2019, Storms Elsa and Fabian brought us more than 70 mm of water in a few days, which means millions of liters on the farm. A blessing after such a dry year. The frogs and toads were singing at dusk. And all our 14 Mediterranean temporary ponds but one were quickly filled to the brim. Some of them infiltrate better, rendering them especially useful for the surrounding trees's root system and the aquifer. Others hardly infiltrate because they are in a stone bed, which makes them very suitable for the reproduction of amphibians. With ponds scattered everywhere, the landscape feels very different from what we would expect from a dryland savannah. Impatient to discover the frogs and toads reproduction in spring. In the swales of the orchard, it is also super easy to plant bare roots trees and simply water them with the swale water.</div>

It seems that Mediterranean tree frogs (<i>Hyla meridionalis</i>) especially enjoy the Cape gooseberries (<i>Physalis peruviana</i>) of the Horta and their little japanese lanterns. It has become a sort of annual meeting, until the heavy frosts of January fall on the plant. While we pick the berries, we keep an open eye in the hope of coming across this true jewel, definitely one of the prettiest of all amphibians. Very few other amphibians are to be seen at this season. Two crushed Pleurodeles Waltl on the village road and some Alytes cisternasii that T. spotted in january in two of our ponds and in the river.</div>

We got very few misty days during the winter break. On one of those mornings, I took the bike early and stopped at a few trees pruned last winter on my way to the farm, enjoying this magic light. In front of the first large holm oak (<i>Quercus rotundifolia</i>), you can see some branch nests prepared to protect very young oak trees against sheep. Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration (<a href="https://fmnrhub.com.au/">FMNR</a>) in progress... This winter, we pruned more than 70 young oak trees.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
à tête noire) et pouillots viennent chipoter dans les inflorescences d'<i>Aloe arborescens</i>. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhumrm_lTsaQBI402QgpSX24SdqCwHBpEJTdmjdcOUCc5wgXvUgxHxUxcZ03H4rvQ9AG30TN3y6gd_T-4dGWL3jTVw3F7qVJKm-fecLSouf2jvzdU5FqyAWoYrl5KTkd5f3IflfDxIBarw/s1600/DSC_0122.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="432" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhumrm_lTsaQBI402QgpSX24SdqCwHBpEJTdmjdcOUCc5wgXvUgxHxUxcZ03H4rvQ9AG30TN3y6gd_T-4dGWL3jTVw3F7qVJKm-fecLSouf2jvzdU5FqyAWoYrl5KTkd5f3IflfDxIBarw/s640/DSC_0122.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On en vient à rêver d'une minuscule forêt d'Aloes - <i>arborescens</i> mais aussi <i>rupestris</i>, <i>ferox</i>, etc. bourdonnante d'abeilles à chaque fête de noël.

This early November, we managed to harvest 7 boxes of nice pomegranates of several cultivars. We took what the Iberian magpies and other tits had left us. The birds made holes in a substantial amount of fruits this year, probably due to their drought-related desperation. Once a whole is done, the bees, wasps, flies and co. get in. And you end up coming across some fruits that look OK from one side while turning out being completely empty from inside... </div>

I didn't make any systematic comparison. But I especially enjoyed Sakerdze (Georgia) and Mistura Honey (Iran). And our pomegranate production was certainly more impressive than what we manage to harvest from our unique producing almond tree :-)<br />

Our yearly visits at Bibi and Fausto's Quinta das Flores are always a great moment of the year. This time, the Alentejanos woke the Algarvios up, for our fourth <a href="http://cebolasdocampinho.blogspot.com/2017/11/gipaa-2.html">GIPAA</a> meeting.<br />
<br />

<br />
And there we went, going through Fausto's pomegranate orchard, filling in heavy baskets of fruits. Discussions about cultivation methods, pomegranate vinegar, large bottles of frozen juice,... Some elegant and pharaonic barrocal dogs pass by, with their curled tails, on the nearby road. And times flies...<br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then, we go and sit - as always - under the large Carob tree, surrounded by small exquisite <i>Plumeria</i>. Oliviero is in charge of the refractometer, Bibi of weighting the fruits, Fausto of the lyrical fruit descriptions and Joaquim Inacio and myself provide a totally independent Alentejano assessment of all these flavors and textures. This year, I found Glavas (Croatia), Pluto (Greece), Kingdom (USA), Austin and Shani especially interesting. Of course, Fausto will disagree with my ranking, as Nordic tastes always seek more acidity than the locals...</div>

<br />
The other day, we took advantage of a late afternoon to get on our bikes, and go and pay tribute to the abandoned Pomegranate orchard of Monte do Paço. On the way, we could already spot some abandoned pomegranate bushes close to the village (above). As we get to Monte do Paço, we walk along the line of trees, have a chat with Sr. Ze, taste some of the fruits, get some cuttings,... I dream of the place with properly pruned trees full of fruits... At the same time, the canopy of the 5 meter high abandoned Pomegranate bushes makes it easier to imagine how Afghan or Azeri pomegranate forests may look like.<br />

It is getting dark. We get ourselves prepared to leave, followed by Sr. Ze's dog. Time to cycle back to the village, stopping here and there to enjoy the evening lights and some further abandoned fruit trees along the dust track (here, a "pero" tree).<br />

Early morning, beginning of November. The drought seems endless. It has rained very little since last April. At the Monte, the largest group of little bustard we saw reached a total of 10 individuals, which is not much. And we saw one or two black-bellied sandgrouse flying from time to time above us. Together with Shlomi, we decide to go and have a look at the Matineiros-Maria Afonso steppe area, the best one for steppe birds in the farm's vicinity. Numbers were small compared to <a href="http://cebolasdocampinho.blogspot.com/2018/11/little-bustard-feathers.html">last year</a>. Yet, in the end, we were happy to spot two small groups of little bustards and around 10 sandgrouses. The birds pics are by Shlomi.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">

</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<br />
